WA: Tomb of unknown sailor about to be exhumed

Preparations have begun to exhume the body of Christmas Island's Unknown Sailor.

Permission has been granted by the federal government for a Royal Australian Navy team
to excavate a gravesite at the island's cemetary in a bid to identify the body.

The sailor, dressed in blue overalls and carrying no identification, was washed ashore
on February 6, 1942.

It's believed he was from the ill-fated HMAS Sydney, which was destroyed in a battle
with the German raider HSK Kormoran on November 19, 1941.

A navy spokesman says the exhumation team has started marking out the area thought
to contain the body of the Unknown Sailor, and digging is expected to start tomorrow.
