Vic: Workers evacuated from chemical fire

MELBOURNE, Dec 22 AAP - Workers at an Altona petrochemical plant were evacuated aftera holding tank erupted in flames this afternoon.

Around 20 staff at Qenos Olefins were at the plant when the holding tank, which containeda five to six metre deep mixture of sludge, water and hydrocarbons exploded at 3.30pm(AEDT).

The cause of the blast was being investigated, a Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) spokesman said.

It took 35 firefighters around two and a half hours to extinguish the chemical fire.

"Chemists from the plant in conjunction with the MFB Fire Investigation and AnalysisDepartment will undertake an analysis of the product, to help establish how it caughtfire," the spokesman said.
