NSW: Two men face court over Australia s largest ecstasy seizure
Two men have appeared in a Sydney court over Australia's largest seizure of ecstasy
tablets and a 15-kilogram haul of heroin.
Together the drugs have a street value of $34 million.
Furniture importer LU LU, aged 42, and MICHAEL SUI KWAN LEUNG, 34, were refused bail
today when they faced Sydney's Central Local Court charged with the importation and possession
of prohibited drugs.
Police say half a million ecstasy tablets and 90,000 hits worth of heroin were concealed
in a shipment of tinned pineapple, which arrived in Sydney from the Chinese port of Huangpu
on March 28.
About 60 federal police agents mounted a surveillance operation, making the arrests on April 6.
Of the 6,000 tins of pineapples, police say 83 contained ecstasy, 12 contained heroin
and one contained both drugs.
The 125 kilograms of ecstasy was Australia's largest ever seizure. The previous biggest
bust was 105 kilograms in December last year.
Both men have been ordered to appear in Central Local Court on May 23.
