Type: News
PeixeUrbano, a collective buying Web site in Brazil, announced a partnership with a global growth equity investment firm General Atlantic, in an investment round that also included participation from Tiger Global Management.
According to a release, the investment aims to further accelerate PeixeUrbano's growth by providing financial and strategic resources for recruiting, new marketing campaigns and geographical expansion.
"The new capital together with GA's active approach, experience in our segment, and expertise in working with growth companies will allow us to strengthen our company's infrastructure and fuel our expansion not just in Brazil and Argentina, but also to other Latin American countries," said Julio Vasconcellos, founding partner and CEO of PeixeUrbano.
Officials noted that General Atlantic has invested nearly US$750 million in Latin America with current investments in online consumer marketplace MercadoLibre and BM&F Bovespa. The firm's recent investments in its Internet sector include Privalia in Europe; Alibaba, RenRen and SouFun in China; and Dice, AKQA, Network Solutions and Gilt Groupe in the US. GA invests annually in the US$2 billion range across six sectors globally, with an average investment size of over US$200 million in 2010.
During the fourth quarter of 2010, PeixeUrbano received investment capital from two other companies: Monashees Capital, one of the main venture capital firms in Brazil, and Benchmark Capital, a Silicon Valley venture capital firm that invests in companies such as eBay and Twitter and made its first investment in Latin America through PeixeUrbano.

NSW:Man beaten in Ivy nightclub basement
EDS: Changes age of victim from 29 to 19 on updated police advice
SYDNEY, Aug 29 AAP - Sydney's exclusive Ivy nightclub is open for business after a
Supreme Court judge set aside an urgent closure order issued by police investigating an
alleged assault by bouncers.
The popular Sydney nightclub, owned by Sydney identity Justin Hemmes, was shut down
by police after two bouncers were charged after allegedly taking a patron to the premises'
basement and repeatedly beating him.
Police also allege management of Ivy ordered the crime scene be cleaned before officers arrived.
The multi-level establishment off George Street was closed on Monday under Section
82 of the Liquor Act, which meant the business could not operate for 72 hours.
But Mr Hemmes' company Merivale took action in the NSW Supreme Court and Justice Peter
Johnson set aside the short-term closure order after police and Merivale agreed to consent
orders.
Outside the court, Merivale Group spokesman Tim Allerton said he was happy with the outcome.
"We are delighted that the order has been withdrawn and we'll be trading as normal
from tonight," he told reporters.
The Ivy, which took five years to build and was completed in late 2008, serves 10,000
guests a night across 19 bars, eight restaurants and several special event venues.
It boasts a number of design awards and has a pool on one of its levels.
On Sunday, a number of men were ejected from the nightclub about 1.30am (AEST) before
returning to the premises, police say.
An altercation allegedly began between the group and security guards who detained one
of the men and separated him from his friends.
Police say he was held down, repeatedly kicked, punched and gagged, before being taken
to the basement security area where the assault continued.
Officers were called to Ivy about 2am and a 19-year-old man was taken to St Vincent's
Hospital with facial injuries, which were serious but not life-threatening.
Two security guards, aged 25 and 30, were arrested at the scene and charged with wounding
or grievous bodily harm with intent.
Hotel management allegedly ordered the crime scene be cleaned before police arrived,
hampering a forensic examination of the area.

Fed: Federal pollies steer clear of Buswell smear
CANBERRA, April 27 AAP - Federal politicians have refused to condemn Western Australian
treasurer Troy Buswell for having an affair with Greens MP Adele Carles.
Mr Buswell confirmed he had a four-month affair with Ms Carles on Monday, and admitted
misusing a ministerial car and hotel entitlement to facilitate it.
WA premier Colin Barnett is expected to sack the treasurer on Tuesday, given Mr Buswell's
history of making false travel claims.
Despite Mr Buswell's questionable conduct, opposition legal affairs spokesman George
Brandis wasn't willing to condemn his Liberal party colleague.
"If, in particular, the manner of their private life suggests that some of their public
positions are hypocritical or insincere, I think the public has the right to know that,"
he told Sky News.
"But leaving aside issues of bad character and hypocrisy, as long as private conduct
doesn't impinge upon public duties, then there is a private sphere for people in public
life."
Small Business Minister Craig Emerson said private lives were not fair fodder for political
attacks.
"I'm afraid I can't enlighten you on what may or may not be the right or the wrong
thing in relation to Mr Buswell," he said.
"Private lives should remain private ... except to the extent that if there is any
issue of taxpayers' funds involved."
Dr Emerson said only when that happened, or a parliamentarian traded on a virtuous
reputation, did their private indiscretions become legitimate public interest.

Fed: Labor's IR laws will not slow productivity: Gillard =2
Ms Gillard said she was concerned that businesses that provide political funding to
the government to help promote AWAs would become propagandists for Prime Minister John
Howard.
"I'd be concerned if the business community got itself into the political fray, I'd
be concerned if they became, if you like, propagandists for Mr Howard," Ms Gillard told
Southern Cross Broadcasting.
"I don't think that that is a wise position for Australian business to put itself in.
"In an election year the political contest is a pretty hard, fast place to be, it's
a contact sport if you like with a lot of injury.
"I don't think it's a wise place for Australian business to be out on the field in
the fray getting those injuries on the way through."
Ms Gillard said trade unions had the right to provide political funding for campaigns
because they represented workers opposed to the government's Work Choices laws.
But businesses represent shareholders, many of whom opposed Work Choices, she said.
"Trade unions in this country still represent hundreds of thousands of Australians."
"Trade unions are entitled to go out there and campaign, if Australian business turn
to their shareholders and said 'what do you think?' I think you'd get a pretty mixed view,"
she said.

Vic: Woman charged with murder after fatal stabbing
MELBOURNE, Dec 30 AAP - A 41-year-old woman was charged with murder after the fatal
stabbing of a 37-year-old man during a street brawl in Melbourne's north early this morning.
Doreen Robinson, of Gladstone Park, appeared in an out-of-sessions hearing tonight,
charged with one count of murder.
Ms Robinson was remanded to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday, January 2.
Police said the man had fatal back and head injuries after a fight which involved up
to 10 people in Koonalda Road, Gladstone Park, early today.
Two other men are in hospital, one in a stable condition with serious knife wounds
and the other in a serious but non life-threatening condition, after being sliced with
a machete-like instrument, police said.
Police said the fight broke out at about 1am (AEDT).
Victoria's homicide squad is investigating the incident, and police said they would
be investigating whether a long-standing grudge between two families in the street sparked
the brawl.
Several weapons have been seized, including a tomahawk, a knife and a baseball bat.
A post-mortem examination will determine the man's cause of death.

NSW: Newcastle steelworks site get $110m clean up
There's a new $110 million remediation plan to clean up the heavily polluted former
BHP steelworks site at Newcastle.
The Regional Land Management Corporation says the clean-up of the 150 hectare site
will begin next year, with plans for a multi-purpose container and cargo terminal for
the former steelworks.
Corporation chair RON ROBSON says the plan will involve the construction of a 1.4 kilometre
long underground wall, new stormwater drainage systems and capping of the site to contain
contaminated soils.
The site at Mayfield -- west of Newcastle's city centre -- has been polluted by 80
years of steel making.
Mr ROBSON says most of the remediation work will be finished by 2012.
BHP finished steelmaking there in 1999, with much of the site turned over to the state
government in 2002.

DON'T OVERLOOK VISUALS IN MERCHANDISING--QUESTION: What techniques can I use to continue the Christmas sales momentum in my business?
Answer: (Part 2 of 2) Last week we discussed stimulating your customer base to buy more, and motivating your sales leads to become customers. This week we will discuss the methods that you could use to generate new customers and increase total sales.
Begin by assessing your current advertising and visual merchandising (displays and point of purchase advertising). Are they doing their job of proclaiming your company's image, educating customers and, most importantly, selling merchandise?
Displays are often poorly planned, lack focus, and are not regularly maintained or updated. These neglected displays can create a negative image with your customer and make selling more difficult. An effective display should always enhance selling opportunities by creating a positive image of your company and products.
Some elements that make up an effective display are:
-- Balance: The display should be pleasing visually and proportionally, not overcrowded.
-- Focus: The entire display needs to convey a central message
-- Coordination: Color, texture, signage and lighting need to work together in harmony to promote the company image as well as attract the customer's attention.
Advertising needs to be constantly reviewed to ensure that it is producing results. To attract new customers you have to appeal to them and then give them a reason to want to buy from you. Is that being accomplished by your visual marketing? Sometimes you may require a graphic designer or advertising assistance to ensure that your message is presented in a way that is attractive and yet motivates action.
Next you need to determine the best method for reaching out to new customers. Begin with those from your existing customer base, because they have already purchased from you and can speak from experience. Therefore, developing them as a source for referrals and positive word-of-mouth endorsements are a valuable source of potential sales without a large expense. You can be creative in establishing a referral program or developing promotions to encourage your customers to spread the word about your business to others.
Industry trade organizations, publications and trade shows are a valuable source for customer information. These sources can be instrumental in directing you toward sources of new customers and the vehicles to reach them. Many of them can be located with a general topic search on the Internet.
For more marketing ideas, UCF Small Business Development Center will present a Small Business Marketing Seminar Thursday from 6-9 p.m. You can register online at www.bus.ucf.edu/sbdc or by calling 407-823-5554.
